PC Test Troubleshooting

Running a benchmark application on a computer system is a very demanding task by definition, so having a correctly configured and problem-free computer system is required for a successful benchmark run. It is not unusual that a benchmark run may reveal problems in your computer system which may not occur in everyday use or even in gaming. While unfortunate, it is also useful as it can help you to find previously hidden problems that could later turn into major problems.

Typical symptoms that indicate a system that is not fully stable

  • System completely halts (hangs) or gives an error (“bluescreen”) when installing/updating the operating system or when playing games or running other demanding applications.
  • Downloads turn up randomly as corrupted.
  • Application installation sometimes fails.
  • Visual corruption can be seen in games or when playing video.
  • Severe error messages come up at times when starting up the system (POST) or starting the operating system.

Troubleshooting a system that is unstable is something that may be best left for professionals. However, there are some basic steps that advanced users could perform to try and narrow down the problem.

  • Ensure that you are using the latest video card drivers.
  • Ensure that all other device drivers are up to date and all operating system updates and service packs are installed.
  • Verify that your system is not overheating. For new systems, ensure that all heatsinks and fans are installed and operating correctly. For old systems, ensure that the system is free from excessive dust and that all fans are operating normally.
  • Verify that the system memory is error-free – Windows Vista and Windows 7 have a memory tester in boot options (press F6 at startup) and MemTest86 is another good solution for verifying stable and error-free operation of system memory.
  • Check that your system has up-to-date antivirus software and that there are no viruses or other malware interfering with the normal operation of your system.
  • Verify that your power supply is adequate for your system configuration – this is especially important for SLI/Crossfire Multi-GPU configurations that have considerable power requirements.
  • Check that your motherboard BIOS/EFI firmware is up to date and update if necessary.
  • Test with BIOS/EFI firmware settings reset to default.
  • Verify that your hard disk has no physical errors. See your hard disk manufacturer website for error testing tools.
